Volunteering in Siem Reap: My Day at Elma School (What to Expect)

One of the most meaningful days of my entire trip to Cambodia was spent volunteering at Elma School in Siem Reap. It was a simple day, but an unforgettable one, and a reminder of how impactful even a short amount of time can be when it’s spent connecting with a local community.

If you’re considering volunteering in Siem Reap or want to understand what a day like this really looks like, here’s exactly what to expect.

While you’re here, see my other Cambodia guides:

Volunteering at Elma School

We arrived in the morning to begin volunteering at Elma School, a local community school that educates around 430 students each day. The school provides lessons in English, maths, computer skills, moral education, gender equality, and farming, giving children a well‑rounded education that supports both academic learning and everyday life.

Due to the extreme heat, the school operates half‑day lessons, with classes running through the morning and finishing around lunchtime for half the school, and the other half joins in the late afternoon. We joined the students for lessons, helping teach English through conversation, reading, and interactive activities.

This was hands down one of the most rewarding experiences of the whole trip. The children were curious, confident, and incredibly engaged – eager to practise their English and communicate with us.

Why English Matters So Much Here

English is a major focus at Elma School, and for good reason. In Siem Reap and surrounding rural areas, English opens up real economic opportunities through tourism. Because of the local community’s increasing reliance on tourism, being able to communicate in English, particularly when working in local markets, significantly increases the chance of making a sale and earning a sustainable income.

Our presence was especially meaningful because this area sees very little tourism. As a result, the students have limited exposure to native English speakers and different accents or dialects. Simply spending time speaking with them, letting them listen to you speak and your dialect, and teaching them the correct pronunciation of words made a genuine difference.

If you’re looking to take part in a volunteering experience like this, I’m more than happy to share the school’s contact details – just reach out via email.

Exploring the Local Village by Tractor

At midday, after lessons had finished, the headteacher invited us to explore the local village – not by car, but by tractor. For just £3 per person, he took us through the surrounding countryside, giving us insight into the everyday lives of the children who attend the school.

This was an incredibly eye‑opening and moving experience. Seeing the homes, farms, and local environment added so much context to the morning’s lessons and made the entire visit feel even more personal.

If you’re given the opportunity to do this during your visit, I would strongly recommend it. It offers an honest look at daily life beyond the tourist centre of Siem Reap.

Is Volunteering at Elma School Worth It?

Absolutely. Volunteering at Elma School was not about “saving” or “fixing” anything – it was about connection, cultural exchange, and showing up where it mattered. Even a short amount of time made an impact, both for the students and for us.

If you’re travelling through Siem Reap and want to experience something deeper than temples and tourist attractions, this is an incredible opportunity to give back in a genuine and respectful way.

If you’d like to take part in this experience yourself, feel free to reach out.  I’m happy to share further details.
