The Ultimate 4‑Day San Sebastián Itinerary: Pintxos, Txakoli, Beaches & Hidden Gems

If you’re dreaming of a long weekend filled with world‑class food, sparkling wine, beautiful scenery and Basque charm, San Sebastián (Donostia) in Spain is the perfect escape. This coastal city in northern Spain is famous for its pintxos bars, Michelin‑starred restaurants, rugged coastline and laid‑back elegance – and this 4‑day itinerary has everything you need for an unforgettable trip.

This is a foodie paradise. Whether you’re here for the food (you should be), the views, or the wine (hello, Txakoli), this guide covers the best things to do in San Sebastián, where to eat, what to see, and how to make the most of every moment.

While you’re here, check out my Guide to The Best Pintxos Bars in San Sebastian .

How to Get to San Sebastián

Getting to San Sebastián is easiest via Biarritz or Bilbao, as the local San Sebastian airport generally has limited flight options and is often extremely expensive. If you’re flying into Biarritz Airport, you’re only a 45‑minute drive from San Sebastián, and a taxi typically costs around €120. Budget travellers can also take a FlixBus (€14) or ALSA bus (€20) from the airport, making it a very affordable route. The drive is scenic, driving from the French to the Spanish Basque countryside.

From Bilbao, the fastest and easiest option is the direct bus, which takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and costs between €1–€17 depending on the operator. If you prefer the train, Euskotren offers a scenic journey for just €6.50, taking around 2 hours 45 minutes.

Where to Stay in San Sebastián

Hotel: Londres y de Inglaterra
This hotel pairs grand Belle Époque charm with unbeatable views over La Concha Beach – one of the best locations in San Sebastián.

Hotel: Sercotel
A comfortable, well‑located base for exploring both the Old Town (Parte Vieja) and Gros – the two neighbourhoods you’ll spend most of your time in. This is well-priced against the city’s hefty price tag, and in walking distance (4 minutes) to the beach!

Hotel: Far Out Inn
A charming adults‑only hillside villa overlooking La Concha Bay, offering cosy rooms, breathtaking sea views, and breakfast served straight to your balcony. They also host free yoga sessions on their rooftop for guests if that’s your thing!

Day 1: Arrival, Old Town Exploring & Pintxos Heaven

Explore the Old Town (Parte Vieja)

Start your trip by wandering through Parte Vieja, the heart of San Sebastián. This is where the city’s pintxos culture comes alive with narrow cobblestone streets, buzzing bars, and boutique shops. The number one rule to truly enjoy San Sebastian for all its glory is to remember not to over-order at each pintxos stop, as tempting as it may be. Have one or two and move on to the next place. You’ll thank me for it later.

Make your way to Plaza de la Constitución, which was once a bullring. Look up and you’ll see the original seat numbers still painted above the balconies.

The Pintxos Walking Tour You Must Do

Kick things off with these legendary stops:

  • Borda Berri – Order the kebab (really a melt‑in‑your‑mouth pork rib).
  • Bar Sport – Try the txangurro (Basque‑style crab).
  • Txepetxa – Their entire menu is dedicated to anchovies with the toppings of your dreams.

Expect the best pintxos of your life –  this is the place to start your trip.

Dinner

Of an evening for your visit night you should consider one of these three options:

  • Casa Urola – If you can get a table here, go. Bookings are snapped up months in advance so don’t be hasty!
  • Casa 887 – Modern Basque cooking in Gros, featured in Conde Nast & Michelin guides.
  • Gandarias – Book a table or spend your evening running through the extensive and incredible options at the tapas bar. This is a must-visit on your trip whether it’s for dinner or lunch.

Day 2: Scenic Views, Sweet Treats & Monte Igueldo Fun

Breakfast at Pasteleria Oiartzun

A famous bakery known for its coconut cake. Sit outside and enjoy the views as locals stroll by.

Then head back into the Old Town for more pintxos –  there’s always something new to try. Check out my full tapas guide to know where to go.

Ride the Monte Igueldo Funicular

Don’t miss the charming 100‑year‑old wooden funicular that climbs up the cliffs of Playa Ondarreta. At the top, you’ll find the best panoramic views of San Sebastián nestled alongside a nostalgic amusement park. Make cure you use the rickety roller coaster hanging over the mountain edge – not only is it fun but the views are really great.

Dinner: Zelai Txiki

A beautiful Basque restaurant on the hillside overlooking San Sebastian with amazing views. Seasonal produce, garden‑grown vegetables and Michelin‑guide recognition. They also have the most incredible wine cellar in a glass box centre-staged for all to see.

Tigger warning – the portions are huge! We asked to share all of our dishes and could not believe that split into two dishes the portions were enough to feed one (and for a big eater that is!).

Stand-out dishes worth calling out:

  • The iberian ham croquette is divine.
  • The octopus is a MUST. Just trust me.
  • The duck.
  • The beef with sauteed mushrooms and mashed potato.
