Isla Mujeres Day Trip from Tulum: Is It Worth It? (Honest Review)

In Tulum you will find lots of vendors pushing trips to Isla Mujeres. When my friends and I visited, we were swayed by this and booked on for roughly $90. The island is beautiful – pristine beaches with crystal clear waters and colourful buildings.

However, taking a day trip to Isla Mujeres from Tulum requires a very early start – with most tours picking you up at or before 5:00am for the two  to three hour transfer to Cancun pier. From there, you’ll board a catamaran to Isla Mujeres, enjoying stunning coastal views and warm Caribbean breeze.

Once you arrive, expect around two hours of free time on the island, which is just enough to:

Rent a golf buggy and explore the island’s colourful streets

Do tequila tasting in one of the many local tequila shops

Buy a souvenir

Wander colourful streets and beach spots

Relax on the beach or take a dip in the sea

Food will be provided at the stops before arriving at the island, so you will be fueled for the day.

While Isla Mujeres is undeniably beautiful, it’s important to know that the journey from Tulum is long, and you’ll likely return around 10pm, if not later. Because of this limited time on the island and the extensive travel time, I don’t recommend this tour if you’re based in Tulum – it’s far better suited to travellers staying in Cancun.

For a more authentic Tulum experience, why not skip this for a visit to one of the neighbouring cenotes, or Mayan Ruins?

Best for: Those desperate to see Isla Mujeres but staying outside Tulum

Skip if: You want a relaxing day or are short on time
