Before you book that flight and start planning outfits for your beach‑club days, there are a few things people don’t tell you about visiting Tulum. Beyond the turquoise water and boho‑chic beach bars, Tulum has its own quirks – from pricey taxis and early closing times to unexpected nightlife realities and essential safety tips. Consider this your honest, no‑nonsense guide to the things every traveller should know before arriving in Tulum, so you can avoid surprises and enjoy the best version of your trip. Here are the main things people do not tell you before visiting Tulum, Mexico:
Tulum is a JOURNEY from Cancun
After a long flight, all you want to do is get there. But from Cancun Airport, Tulum is at least a two‑hour drive, and the journey isn’t cheap – pre-booked private transfers typically cost $90–$130 one way, and taxis can be even more. It’s something you’ll need to factor into both your travel time and your holiday budget.
But don’t worry – the moment you finally arrive, step into the warm air, and grab that first margarita, it’ll feel like a well‑earned victory after a long journey.
Tulum is on a Curfew
One thing people forget to mention when you’re planning a trip to Tulum is that everything closes pretty early. Keep this in mind for when you’re making evening reservations, if you want to factor in a bar before or after dinner, the nightlife scene generally shuts at 1am. If you’re in Tulum Centro, the nightlife remains open slightly longer, until 2am. Jungle raves are a big thing here, and they are your best bet for a super-late night party!
The Cartel Have a Presence in Some Restaurants
Some nightlife areas in Tulum may have a cartel presence. You may encounter people selling in bathrooms, where a polite “no thank you” is generally enough. Being totally honest, from my experience they do not make you feel unsafe beyond the immediate shock. They are there offering their services for those who want them, but are not pushy with it.
However, that’s not to say you do not need to have your wits about you, and there are dangers which naturally come with this. I touch on this in my honest review of Gitano Restaurant.
